The blank is visible, but its appearance doesn’t tell us what material it is. Two identical meshes can produce different forming results when their material or thickness changes.
For the first exercise, use the supplied material card. Choosing another card because it also says “steel” in the name gives you a different study.
Select the material
Open the blank’s Material page in Blank Editor. Choose the intended card through the database control and read its name and unit system.
You can open the properties and see what is inside. I am leaving material calibration for later; here we just need to understand the supplied assignment.
Material database files use .psm. If you want to experiment with a card, keep your variation in a separate database so you can return to the original.
Enter the thickness
Use the thickness from your exercise or sheet data, with the correct unit. A surface blank has thickness as a property. How thick it looks on the screen is not a measurement.
Changing it after building offset tools can affect their geometry, so return to the Tool Editor and rebuild affected tools where required.
Apply it to the correct blank
Check the object name before applying. It is easy to focus on the values and forget which object is selected.
For an orthotropic material, inspect the rolling-direction vector and its frame. The directional properties refer to that orientation within the sheet, not the camera view.
Enable the Material page’s apply toggle, apply the settings and reopen the page. You should find the intended card and thickness still assigned.
If you imported a blank with thickness in .pc format, check the imported value too. The 2025 release notes report a fix in that import path; checking your actual assignment is still worthwhile.
That completes the basic material assignment. If r0, r45 and r90 have caught your attention, this post explains them. Otherwise, continue with the blank mesh.
