Read Material Anisotropy and r-values in PAM-STAMP 2025

You open a material card and find r0, r45 and r90. The angles refer to directions, but which directions? They are measured relative to the sheet’s rolling direction.

That is the point of this post. We will read an existing card and relate it to the blank. Fitting a new material model needs suitable test data and is a separate job.

First look at the basic properties

On Mechanics, locate Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio and density. Read the units and identify the selected plasticity law.

Changing the law can change its required inputs. Keep a copy of the original card while exploring; selecting a more elaborate option doesn’t create the data it needs.

The Hill 48 anisotropy choices

The documented controls distinguish three cases:

  • Isotropic: no directional r-values are requested.
  • Normal anisotropy: an average r-value is used.
  • Orthotropic: directional values such as r0, r45 and r90 are used.

Those angles are 0°, 45° and 90° to rolling. They are not directions relative to the current camera.

Show the rolling direction on the blank

Return to Blank Editor and display the rolling-direction vector and reference frame. Now connect the card’s directions to the actual sheet.

If you turn the blank relative to the tools and change its material orientation, you have changed the forming case, even if the outline still looks familiar.

Look at the curves too

Inspect the hardening information and forming limit curve. They do different jobs; don’t treat both as interchangeable descriptions of strength.

Keep the source of the data with the material card, especially if a curve was estimated. For a deeper explanation of hardening and reverse loading, continue with this article.

After this inspection, you should be able to name the law, units and rolling orientation. That is already more useful than assigning a material and never opening it again.
