Run and Monitor a Simulation in PAM-STAMP 2025

Now we can run it. Open Start a Computation through the workflow controls and look at the selected action before confirming.

Why am I pointing this out? Because writing an input file and starting a simulation are separate actions. The first can finish successfully while no calculation is running at all.

Select the host

Under Run on, choose the configured host for your exercise. If you have not set one up, use the host-configuration post.

Read Work Directory too. For a remote run, it must make sense from the solver machine’s side. A folder visible on your own computer is not automatically available at the same path on another machine.

Choose the action

The three routes are:

  • Write input file only: prepare the input.
  • Start the computation only: run existing input.
  • Write input file and start the computation: do both.

After changing the model, use a route that writes the updated definition. Otherwise, you may run yesterday’s input while looking for the effect of today’s change.

Review the data-check option and immediate or batch execution. You can leave the optional program-after-computation field unused for this exercise.

Is the solver running?

Open Solver Messages. Once the files exist, it reads the project’s .out and .msg information. Enable automatic refresh to follow progress.

Look for the expected stages and computed states. When an error appears, read the nearby output too; the surrounding lines often explain where the problem started.

Results can open the available output while the job continues. Just don’t mistake the latest saved state for the end of the complete process.

If you need to stop, Stop solver sends a request. Watch the messages to see when it has stopped and what output remains.

When the calculation ends, read its completion or stop message. Then we can look at the result. That is where the colours finally have something to tell us.
