PAM-STAMP Project Files: What Each File Is For

You saved one project and now the folder has a whole collection of files. It is reasonable to wonder which one you actually need.

The short answer is that the project is not necessarily self-contained in the PSP file. Before copying it to another computer, let us separate the main file roles.

Look at a complete project folder

The .psp stores information common to project modules, such as display-related project data. The .pre contains preprocessing setup and mesh information used for the calculation.

An .att is an ASCII setup description. A .mif is an ASCII mesh input. These support workflows where setup or mesh is handled outside the normal binary project route.

There is an important detail in the 2022 guide: when matching PRE and ATT files coexist, ATT information can take precedence during the documented reading and launch routes. If you edit ASCII input, keep it consistent with what you expect the GUI to show.

Results are different from recovery files

The older guide lists .res state files and .his history output. The 2025 documentation also describes newer output and continuation routes using files such as .erfh5 and .pic.

So don’t expect every version and output configuration to generate the same folder contents.

.rst files support solver restart. The older guide also describes distributed restart files associated with individual nodes. Keeping one arbitrarily selected file is not a reliable recovery plan for a distributed job.

The restart numbering may cycle when the retained-file limit is reached. Check the progression associated with a restart instead of assuming the highest-looking filename is the latest state.

What should you copy?

Use Project Management to copy the project and select the required associated data. Then open the copy and check that its setup and intended results are available.

Keep solver messages with a failed run if you need to investigate it. Deleting the log immediately removes useful clues.

For cleanup, decide what you must preserve: rerunning from setup, viewing results or continuing a calculation. Each needs different data. The restart post explains the continuation choices; project creation shows how to keep a baseline without turning every filename into another “final” version.
